Fifty dollars separates these two phones. In this Samsung Galaxy A37 vs Google Pixel 10a comparison, the real issue isn't the list price it's what each manufacturer decided to do with the constraints of a sub-$500 budget, and how differently they answered that question.

The Galaxy A37 5G went on sale in the US yesterday at $449.99 for 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. The Pixel 10a has been on shelves since March 5 at $499 for the same configuration. Samsung packed in fresh hardware: a new Exynos 1480 chip, an IP68 water resistance upgrade from the previous model's IP67, 45W fast charging, and a 1,900-nit display. Google, by contrast, shipped what The Verge called not a spec refresh but effectively a rerelease same Tensor G4, same cameras, same battery as the Pixel 9a.

The Galaxy A37 is the better deal on paper. The Pixel 10a is the more complete phone in practice. Every category in this comparison comes back to that tension. Which side wins depends on what kind of buyer you are.

This piece examines the five categories that determine whether a $450-$500 phone earns three to five years in your pocket: software and longevity, design and display, cameras, battery and charging, and performance.


Samsung Galaxy A37 vs Google Pixel 10a: software support and AI features

Most people comparing phones at this price skip straight to cameras. That's a mistake. Software longevity is the category that determines how long the phone stays useful and for a phone you plan to keep for four years, it shapes everything else.

Samsung has explicitly committed to six Android OS upgrades and six years of security patches for the A37, confirmed in the Samsung Global Newsroom announcement last week. That's a meaningful promise at this price. Google's update commitment for the Pixel 10a was not independently verified from a primary source for this piece; WIRED's March review noted the phone offers "some of the longest software support you'll find for the money," consistent with the Pixel A-series reputation, but Samsung's six-year pledge is the confirmed figure here.

Both phones get One UI 8.5 with Gemini on Samsung's side, and the full Pixel software stack on Google's. There's a real ceiling on the A37's AI ambitions, though. The Verge confirmed that neither the A37 nor A57 receives the Gemini task-automation capabilities booking a ride, ordering groceries that launched simultaneously on the Galaxy S26 and Pixel 10. The A37 does get Voice Transcription, AI Select, and an upgraded Circle to Search with multi-object recognition. Real additions. Just not yet tested by independent reviewers.

Google's software depth is a different story entirely.

WIRED documented Hold for Me working through a four-hour airline call the phone held the queue and sent an alert only when a human picked up. That's not a spec bullet point; that's hours of your life back. Features like Now Playing (passive ambient song identification), the Recorder app's AI transcription, and Satellite SOS which lets you contact emergency services with no cell signal, new to the 10a and absent on the 9a are mature, documented, and independently verified. Samsung's Circle to Search upgrade and Voice Transcription are stated features with no reviewer confirmation yet.

Samsung's confirmed six-year update promise matches the Pixel's reputation on longevity. On software depth, the evidence currently favors Google.


Design and display: where the Pixel wins more than expected

The display gap is the first thing to state plainly. The Pixel 10a's panel hits 3,000 nits peak brightness, confirmed by WIRED in real-world testing. The A37 tops out at 1,900 nits, per NotebookCheck's launch coverage. That's 37% dimmer at peak. In direct sunlight, the difference isn't theoretical it's visible.

Screen protection tells a similar story. The Pixel 10a upgraded from Gorilla Glass 3 to Gorilla Glass 7i, a significant jump confirmed by both WIRED and The Verge. The Pixel's fully flush camera module no bump, no rocking on a table earned specific positive mentions from both publications. Clean pocket ergonomics, no wobble.

The A37 closes a real gap on durability. Both phones now carry IP68 water resistance; for the A37, that's an upgrade from IP67 on its predecessor, confirmed by Samsung and The Verge. Samsung's own spec documentation notes that IP ratings degrade with normal wear over time worth keeping in mind, though it applies to both devices.

At 196g and 7.4mm thick, the A37 retains the chunkier bezel design from its predecessor. The slimmer, redesigned aesthetic Samsung's marketing emphasizes went to the pricier A57, as The Verge confirmed.

Pixel wins on display by a clear margin and has the more refined physical design. The A37 meaningfully closes the durability gap with IP68. That's a real upgrade just not enough to take this section.


Pixel 10a vs Galaxy A37 camera and battery: separating proof from promise

Camera comparisons between these two phones run into an immediate asymmetry: one has been reviewed extensively, and one has not.

The Pixel 10a uses the same 48MP main and 13MP ultrawide sensors from the Pixel 9a. That's a legitimate knock on Google's upgrade cycle. But WIRED's March review described output as "pleasingly exposed with sharp details and natural colors" and called it "a great camera experience." These are proven sensors with years of Google's computational photography tuned to them. The A37 leads with a 50MP main sensor paired with a 5MP macro. On the ultrawide, Samsung's official global spec sheet lists 8MP, while pre-launch reporting from NotebookCheck cited 12MP a discrepancy reflecting leak inaccuracy rather than a genuine product split. Samsung's published specs are authoritative. The camera hardware appears largely carried over from prior devices; the improvement story rests on an upgraded Image Signal Processor, not new sensors.

Samsung's ISP claims better low-light performance, improved color accuracy, enhanced Nightography are plausible based on Samsung's own launch materials. No independent side-by-side testing of the A37's camera against the Pixel 10a exists in any reviewed coverage as of this writing.

The A37's camera story is reasonable on paper. But it's still a story. Buyers who prioritize photography should lean Pixel until independent long-form testing arrives.


Battery, charging, and performance: Samsung's speed vs. Google's flexibility

Samsung's 5,000mAh battery with 45W wired charging reaches approximately 60% in 30 minutes, per Samsung's global newsroom. The Pixel 10a's 30W wired charging hits about 50% in the same window, confirmed by WIRED's testing. Samsung's wired charging speed advantage is real. The catch: Samsung sells its 45W charger separately, as NotebookCheck flagged. Buying the charger adds cost that narrows the A37's $49 price advantage.

On wireless charging, there's no contest. The Pixel 10a supports 10W Qi wireless charging. The A37 supports none at all, confirmed by The Verge. If you use a charging pad at your desk or nightstand, the Samsung drops off your list immediately.

Battery stamina is roughly comparable, with caveats on both sides. The Pixel 10a's 5,100mAh cell covers a full day under normal use; both WIRED and The Verge noted it can need an afternoon top-up under heavy use, like travel or extended camera sessions. Samsung claims two-day battery life for the A37's 5,000mAh pack but that figure comes from Samsung's own materials and hasn't been independently tested. Call it best-case until reviewers say otherwise.

On chipset performance: the Pixel 10a's Tensor G4 with 8GB RAM handled everyday tasks and AI workloads without friction in WIRED's testing, though AI-specific tasks ran noticeably slower than the Tensor G5 in the Pixel 10 Pro. The A37's Exynos 1480 is a capable 4nm chip, but it's two generations old in Samsung's own lineup previously used in the Galaxy A55, as NotebookCheck flagged in pre-launch coverage last November. No independent benchmark comparing the two chips in this specific matchup exists yet. A direct performance verdict isn't supportable from current evidence.


What the $49 difference actually buys

Run the categories together and a clear picture emerges of what each phone's premium or discount actually represents.

Spending $499 on the Pixel 10a buys: a proven camera system with years of tuning behind it, a brighter display by a wide margin (3,000 nits vs. 1,900), wireless charging the A37 doesn't offer at any speed, and a software ecosystem with documented features that reviewers have actually used in the real-world. Satellite SOS alone is a meaningful capability addition with no equivalent on the A37.

Spending $449.99 on the A37 buys: more new hardware per dollar, faster wired charging speed (with an adapter you'll need to purchase separately), a genuine IP68 durability upgrade, and Samsung's six-year update commitment in writing. If Samsung's camera and battery claims hold under independent testing, the value case strengthens considerably.

The gap isn't really about fifty dollars. It's about how much verification you want before you commit.


Who should buy which phone

Buy the Pixel 10a ($499) if:

  • You use wireless charging. The A37 has no wireless charging at any speed.

  • Camera reliability matters and you want independent proof behind it, not manufacturer claims.

  • You want a mature, deep software ecosystem: Hold for Me, Now Playing, Satellite SOS, Recorder transcription, and a multi-year track record of useful Pixel-exclusive features, all confirmed by WIRED in March 2026.

  • You spend significant time outdoors or in bright environments where 3,000 nits vs. 1,900 nits translates to a visible difference.

Buy the Galaxy A37 5G ($449.99) if:

  • You want more new hardware per dollar: IP68, 45W wired charging, a fresh chipset, and a 1,900-nit AMOLED display at a $49 lower entry price, per the Samsung US Newsroom.

  • You plug in with a cable every night and want the fastest morning top-up and you're willing to buy the 45W adapter separately.

  • You're comfortable waiting for independent camera and real-world performance reviews before the full story comes in.

Samsung commits to six years; Pixel line is reported to offer up to seven years, which represents a genuine shift in what the midrange segment offers. That matters regardless of which device you choose.

The A37's full story will become clearer as independent long-term reviews emerge over the coming months. If Samsung's camera and battery claims hold under testing, the value case gets considerably stronger. Until then, the Pixel 10a is the lower-risk buy. The A37 may prove to be the smarter deal it just requires more trust in manufacturer materials than the evidence currently supports.
