Instagram Direct is fast becoming the end-all-be-all messaging app, and it just added some incredibly convenient features that should make it a bit more practical. These new additions have a clear purpose: To help Instagram Direct grow its base and take on more feature-rich messengers like Snapchat or WhatsApp.

The updates for Instagram Direct are available on both Android and iOS devices, and they're definitely worth looking into whether you use Instagram Direct or not. So for those who currently use another messaging service, read further to see if they're compelling enough for you to finally make the switch.

What's New

Glaringly absent from previous iterations, the ability to send external web links has now been added to Instagram Direct. So you can now share links by either pasting or typing them in, which in turn will be sent as a fully functional link complete with its own preview window.

Instagram Direct now also let its users upload images and videos in their original aspect ratios, regardless of whether they're landscape or portrait. This seemingly insignificant feature has the benefit of saving people a lot of time when sharing images, as they no longer have to crop the file prior to sending.
