Should you restart your phone regularly? The honest answer is: probably less often than you think, and for different reasons than you've been told. Your phone is not a 2003 Windows PC. It doesn't need a Sunday-night reboot to stay functional. Modern smartphones are built to run for weeks at a time without issue, and the idea that routine restarts keep a phone healthy is, at best, weakly supported by the evidence.

That said, a restart is still one of the most useful things you can do when something actually goes wrong. And in one specific scenario, rebooting before handing your phone to anyone in authority is the most effective protective move available to you.

If you want a number: Engadget reports that you generally don't need to reboot more than once a week, and even that is a ceiling rather than a target. But frequency is the least interesting part of this question. The more useful questions are when a restart actually does something, and when it doesn't.

How your phone actually manages memory (and why the "fresh slate" idea mostly doesn't hold up)

The case for routine reboots usually rests on the idea that clearing memory keeps a phone snappy. The problem is that this gets the underlying model exactly backwards.

Your phone keeps recently used apps and data loaded in RAM, which is fast-access memory, so it doesn't have to pull everything from slower internal storage every time you switch apps. A phone showing high RAM utilization isn't overloaded. It's working as designed. The fuller the cache, the faster apps open.

Android makes this explicit. Built on the Linux kernel, the OS treats empty RAM as an efficiency failure, and most Android phones deliberately keep RAM utilization at 70-80% or higher. Think of it like a kitchen counter. A clear counter isn't more productive than one with your tools already out. It just means you'll spend more time fetching things from the cupboards every time you want to cook.

When something actually needs memory, the OS handles it. Android includes a low memory killer daemon that identifies which suspended apps to clear when a higher-priority process needs space. You don't need to do this manually. The phone already knows, and it's better at the job than any manual intervention.

iPhone works differently under the hood, but reaches the same conclusion. Apps visible in the App Switcher are typically suspended rather than actively running. An Apple Discussions guide on the subject is blunt: force-closing those apps doesn't speed anything up. It makes the next launch slower, because the phone has to reload the app from storage instead of resuming it from a suspended state. It doesn't help battery life. It doesn't clean up RAM. iOS manages memory better than any manual habit can.

Force-closing on Android carries harder consequences. When you swipe away background apps, you trigger cold starts every time you reopen them. The phone has to load the app from internal storage from scratch, which spikes CPU usage, generates more heat, and draws more power than leaving the OS to manage memory on its own. Internal storage also has a finite number of read-write cycles, so excess cold starts contribute to minor wear over time. The "clean slate" instinct, taken far enough, actively works against the phone's design.

So when does a restart actually help? When something is genuinely misbehaving. A cellular connection stuck on No Service. An app caught in a loop. Sluggish performance after a software update that didn't fully initialize. Apple Support lists restarting as the first diagnostic step when a phone shows SOS, No Service, or Searching. That's the right framing: a restart as a response to a specific problem, not a scheduled ritual.

Does restarting your phone help with security? One case where it genuinely does

The performance case for routine reboots is modest. The security case is more interesting, but only in one specific and well-defined scenario.

When you restart a phone but haven't yet entered your PIN or passcode, the device enters what's called a Before First Unlock (BFU) state. In BFU, encryption keys haven't loaded into RAM yet. The data is still on the device, but reaching it requires breaking encryption rather than reading keys that are already sitting in accessible memory. Once you unlock the phone, those keys load, and that protection disappears for as long as the device stays unlocked.

The practical implication is concrete. Engadget notes that if your phone is taken by sophisticated thieves or government officials, including US Customs and Border Protection, a device in BFU state is significantly harder to crack. Forensic tools deployed by state actors have a more difficult time extracting data from a phone that hasn't been unlocked since its last reboot. A phone that's been unlocked and put back to sleep offers considerably less resistance to the same tools.

The practical guidance follows directly: if you're heading through border security or a TSA line, or into any situation where your phone might be examined without your consent, reboot it before you arrive and don't unlock it. That's a specific action with a clear mechanism behind it.

The NSA has also recommended rebooting at least once a week as a partial defense against spear phishing and zero-click attacks. Keep that in proportion. As Engadget reports, the NSA acknowledges this protection is marginal, and rebooting does very little to prevent either attack type outright. Zero-click exploits, which have been found in apps ranging from iMessage to Chrome, don't require user interaction to execute, and a weekly reboot schedule is not a serious defense against them. The BFU benefit is more concrete and better-supported than the general anti-hacking argument.

It's also worth noting what the major platforms have already concluded about automatic restarts. Google Pixel phones and iPhones both reboot automatically after 72 hours of inactivity, according to Engadget, a behavior that appears designed for situations where a phone has been lost, stolen, or seized, returning it to BFU state without any action from the owner. Samsung offers user-configurable automatic power cycling so the phone restarts at a convenient time, capturing whatever performance and security benefit exists without requiring a new habit. Neither approach looks like an urgent maintenance mandate. Occasional cycling is treated as reasonable, not critical.

How often should you restart your phone, and what actually fixes a slow device

If your phone feels genuinely slow, a restart might give you brief relief. It won't fix the underlying cause.

The more targeted fixes for Android specifically, according to How-To Geek, are simpler than most people expect. Delete apps you don't actively use. They run background processes, consume memory, and generate noise that the OS has to manage. Fewer apps means less competition for RAM, with no downside. Keep at least 10-20% of internal storage free, which speeds up how quickly the phone can move app data from storage into RAM. When storage is nearly full, that transfer slows down, and the phone feels sluggish in a way that no amount of rebooting will fix.

For heavier Android users, the Developer Options menu includes a Running Services view that shows which apps are consuming the most memory. If an app you rarely use is sitting near the top of that list, restricting its background activity through Battery Usage settings is more surgical than a full reboot. The caveat is worth knowing: restricting background activity too aggressively causes real friction, delayed notifications, smartwatch sync failures, widgets that stop updating. It's a scalpel, not a broom.

Here's where a restart fits into the decision:

  • If something is misbehaving, a stuck connection, a crashing app, sluggish behavior after an update: restart first. It costs nothing and often works.
  • If you want automatic maintenance: Samsung's scheduled restart feature handles it overnight. Pixel and iPhone do it automatically after extended inactivity. Set it and stop thinking about it.
  • If you're going through border security or a checkpoint: reboot before you arrive and leave the phone locked. That's the one case with the clearest mechanism and the most to gain.
  • If your phone is just slow: a restart isn't the fix. Delete what you don't use, free up storage, and let the OS do its job.

What actually matters here

Routine reboots won't transform a sluggish phone. Both Android and iOS are engineered to manage memory aggressively and automatically, and the performance benefit from an occasional restart is real but narrow. It clears specific glitches; it doesn't address structural slowness.

The genuinely underrated use case is BFU. For most people in most situations, it never comes up. But at a border checkpoint or anywhere a device might be examined by someone with forensic tools, a rebooted and locked phone is meaningfully harder to crack than one that's been unlocked. Reboot before you get in line. Don't unlock until you're through.

For a slow phone, skip the restart ritual. Delete the apps you haven't opened in months, clear some storage headroom, and trust that the OS is already doing the memory management job better than any manual habit can. The most useful thing you can do is get out of its way.
