ChatGPT multiple accounts on mobile: what changes, what stays separate
OpenAI is rolling out ChatGPT multiple accounts on mobile, letting iPhone and Android users stay signed in to two accounts at once and jump between them without logging out. The feature lives in Settings > Switch account, according to OpenAI's release notes.
The rollout looks uneven on paper. OpenAI's newer Help Center page on using multiple accounts lists account switching as available on web and in the iOS and Android apps, but an older Help Center article published last week still says switching works on the web only and calls native mobile support "not yet supported." Both pages describe the same feature. The gap between them points to a staggered rollout rather than a documentation error, though OpenAI hasn't confirmed that directly.
Only two accounts can be signed in to the switcher at a time, and only one is active at any moment. Switching between them doesn't merge chats, memory, billing, or workspaces; each account stays fully separate from the other.
This breaks down what actually moves with the active account, what stays locked behind each login, and the subscription traps worth checking before paying for a second plan.
How to switch between ChatGPT accounts on iPhone and Android
Setting up the switcher takes one trip into the app's settings. Open Settings > Switch account, then add a second login without signing out of the first, per OpenAI's release notes and the newer Help Center guide.
The switcher itself caps out at two signed-in accounts per session. OpenAI's Help Center notes that users can create more than two ChatGPT accounts overall, but only two can sit in the switcher at once, so adding a third means signing out of one of the first two.
Creating that second account costs nothing upfront. It starts on the Free plan by default, with no payment required to set it up, according to OpenAI.
Logging out behaves differently depending on how many accounts are active. On mobile, signing out of the active account simply flips to the other signed-in account; signing out of the last remaining one sends the app back to the sign-in screen.
Rollout status: what's confirmed and what isn't
The conflicting documentation matters for anyone checking whether the feature has reached their phone. A missing Switch account option doesn't necessarily mean the rollout skipped the device. OpenAI's documentation on managed workspaces notes that organizations can restrict whether account switching is available at all inside a managed workspace, so an absent option could be an administrator setting rather than a rollout gap.
OpenAI hasn't published a rollout percentage, region list, or completion timeline for mobile. Treat "available on iOS and Android" as in progress, not guaranteed for every account right now.
What stays separate when you switch ChatGPT accounts
The active account controls everything on screen. Chats, memory, files, settings, and any connected workspace switch to match whichever account is selected, according to OpenAI.
What doesn't move is the longer list. Switching between accounts does not:
- Move chats between accounts
- Share memory or conversation history
- Share files or uploads
- Combine billing or subscriptions
- Merge accounts or workspaces
That list comes straight from OpenAI's Help Center, and it's worth taking at face value. Two accounts signed in on the same phone act like two separate ChatGPT installs that happen to share a login screen.
Notifications complicate that separation slightly. Both signed-in accounts can send push alerts depending on each account's settings and the device's permissions, and tapping a notification for the inactive account switches into it automatically, per OpenAI's Help Center. That's a notification-routing detail worth knowing, not a confirmed privacy exposure; OpenAI's documentation doesn't describe what appears in a lock-screen preview, only that alerts can arrive for either account. OpenAI does advise checking which account is active before starting a conversation or making a purchase, so a quick glance at the account indicator before typing anything sensitive is a reasonable habit.
Billing and subscriptions don't follow you across accounts
Each ChatGPT account keeps its own plan. Switching never transfers or shares a subscription, according to OpenAI's troubleshooting guide. Flip from a paid account to a Free one and the Free account stays Free.
A mobile subscription is tied to two things at once: the Apple Account or Google Play account used to pay, and the specific ChatGPT account the purchase was made under. Reinstalling the app or restoring a purchase doesn't reassign that ownership, so a fresh install on the same phone won't unlock a paid plan on a different ChatGPT login.
The more frustrating scenario involves Google Play. An existing ChatGPT subscription tied to a Google Play account can block that same store account from buying a plan on a different ChatGPT login, even after the original subscription expires. Canceling it may not lift the restriction either, OpenAI says. Anyone planning to pay for a second account should check which ChatGPT login already owns an existing plan on that device's app store account before attempting a new purchase, to avoid a duplicate charge or a blocked checkout.
There's a separate limit worth knowing about, too. OpenAI's switcher documentation distinguishes the two-account session cap from device limits, a privacy and security restriction on how many paid personal accounts can be used on a given phone. Signing out of one account or switching to another doesn't guarantee a different paid account becomes eligible on that same device. A "device limit reached" message points to that restriction, not a bug in the switcher.
Work and personal accounts: what switching protects and what it doesn't
OpenAI recommends setting up a separate personal account under an email address a person actually owns, rather than relying on a Personal workspace tied to a work email, per its Help Center. A company-managed workspace and a personally owned account aren't the same thing, even if both show up labeled "Personal" somewhere in the app.
Data created inside an organization-managed account stays governed by that organization's policies regardless of which account is active afterward, and an administrator may be able to access and manage it, per OpenAI's Help Center. Switching to a personal account later doesn't undo what already happened on the work login.
That distinction has real consequences if a job ends. If an employer cuts off a work email or managed workspace, the account tied to it, along with any personal conversations stored there, becomes inaccessible, OpenAI notes. Switching to a personal account doesn't preserve or transfer that data beforehand, so anything worth keeping needs to move before access disappears.
Account switching and workspace switching aren't interchangeable either. One account can hold multiple workspaces, including a personal one and a company one, and organization admins can restrict whether the switcher is even available inside a managed workspace, per OpenAI. A missing Switch account option in a work-issued app isn't automatic proof the rollout hasn't arrived; it might just be an administrator's setting.
What to do now
Open Settings in the ChatGPT app and look for Switch account. If it's missing, the rollout may not have reached that device yet, or a managed workspace could be restricting it, and there's no way to tell which from the app alone.
If the option is there, confirm which ChatGPT account already owns any paid plan tied to that phone's Apple Account or Google Play account before adding a second login or attempting a new purchase. Skipping that check risks a duplicate charge or a blocked subscription.
Before starting a sensitive conversation or uploading a file, check the active account indicator first. Nothing stops a personal and work login from sitting side by side in the same app, and whichever account is active determines where that conversation lives and which policies apply to it.
