Google Maps iPhone Duo Support Arrives in Version 26.44.4

Google Maps iPhone Duo support arrives in version 26.44.4

Google Maps iPhone Duo support appears to have landed with version 26.44.4, now live on the App Store. AppleInsider says the app was updated specifically to add iPhone Duo support, replacing the black vertical strip that previously sat near the status bar with content that reaches both displays' edges. MacRumors separately confirmed the update is available, describing the same shift to full inner- and outer-screen coverage. Both reports published yesterday.

The prior build, version 26.43.1, left a visible gap along the right edge of both screens, close to the Duo's circular status bar, according to MacRumors.

Google's own release notes don't back any of this up. AppleInsider reports the App Store listing for 26.44.4 describes the update only as "bug fixes," with no mention of iPhone Duo anywhere in the text. The layout change comes from AppleInsider's own hands-on testing, not a company statement, so it counts as reported behavior rather than a documented fix. Whether the rollout has reached every Duo owner or every region isn't established by either outlet.

Confirm your Google Maps iPhone Duo support version

Open the Google Maps listing in the App Store to see which build is installed, or tap "Updates" from the App Store's profile icon to check whether 26.44.4 is waiting.

Look for 26.44.4 specifically. Assuming a later build carries the same fix is reasonable, but it's not something either outlet has verified directly. Google Maps also requires iOS 16.0 or later on iPhone, according to its App Store listing, so confirm the device meets that baseline if the update won't show up at all.

If 26.44.4 isn't listed yet, neither report explains why. Check again in a day or two before assuming anything's wrong with the account or device.

What's confirmed about the rollout, and what isn't

  • Version 26.44.4 is reported as live on the App Store, based on AppleInsider's hands-on testing and MacRumors' independent reporting.
  • Neither outlet confirms the update has reached every account, device, or region. Both describe what's visible on a tested unit and the public App Store listing, not a global rollout status.
  • AppleInsider and MacRumors reached the same conclusion from different angles, a tested device versus the live listing, which is stronger than a single source but still short of an official Google statement.

What Google Maps dual-screen support looks like now

Google Maps is the latest app to catch up with the iPhone Duo's dual-screen form, filling both displays to make use of the available space, AppleInsider's testing found.

On the inner display, the map or satellite view reportedly fills the screen corner to corner, with menus and the search box pushed to the left margin. AppleInsider compares the result to Google Maps on iPad rather than the old phone-sized layout, where a standard iPhone view could be nudged left or right but still left most of the screen unused.

The outer screen gets the same treatment. Maps previously sat offset to clear the dock; the app now reportedly uses the full screen there too. That's Google Maps full screen on iPhone Duo behavior extended to the second panel, not just the inner one.

Street View changed as well. AppleInsider's testing found it now defaults to a split view, with Street View on the left and the map filling the right, and no apparent way to swap which side each occupies. Street View can still expand to fill the whole screen on its own, similar to how Apple Maps handles Look Around. Closing the device while in Street View moves that view to the outer screen, with a close button to return to the map.

To check this on an owned device, unfold Maps fully and look at both screens in map and satellite view. Content should reach every edge with no unused strip near the status bar, the gap MacRumors reported in version 26.43.1.

Google Maps black borders iPhone Duo: what to check if the border remains

  • Confirm the App Store shows 26.44.4 as installed, not just downloading.
  • Fully close Maps and reopen it on both displays before concluding anything is wrong.
  • Test both map and satellite views to see whether the issue persists across the app.

If the same vertical strip shows up where MacRumors described it, reopening the app after confirming the version is the first thing worth trying. A fully black screen or unresponsive touch controls are different symptoms, and the available reports don't establish whether 26.44.4 affects them at all.

A separate Google Maps Community thread describes a black screen appearing when opening full business reviews on an iPhone 15 Plus, posted about two weeks ago. That report involves a standard iPhone, not the Duo's dual displays, and Google's reply only says the issue was passed to its team for review, not that a cause or fix was identified. Treat it as a separate, unresolved issue rather than something 26.44.4 touches.

Checking the installed iOS version is reasonable general troubleshooting before assuming any app is broken, but neither AppleInsider nor MacRumors ties the Duo border fix to a specific iOS build. An iOS update here is routine maintenance, not a documented remedy.

What Apple's developer tools have to do with Duo layouts

Apple's Xcode 27.1 toolkit, released to developers two months ago, gives app makers finer control over how their software fills the iPhone Duo's two screens in both portrait and landscape, including a preview mode that shows all four device states before an app ships, AppleInsider reported at the time. Apps built without the updated tools still run, but with the result Apple's own materials describe: an old layout centered on the inner screen with black bars on either side once the device unfolds.

That's useful context for why full-width support is arriving app by app instead of all at once. It isn't proof of anything specific to Maps. Neither AppleInsider nor MacRumors states that Google used the newer Xcode build to ship 26.44.4; the timing lines up, but the two outlets don't draw that connection themselves.

What to do now

Check the installed Google Maps version today. If it's below 26.44.4, update through the App Store, and check again later if the update hasn't shown up yet.

Once updated, unfold Maps and test both the inner and outer displays in map and satellite view, watching for edge-to-edge coverage with no strip near the status bar.

If a black border is still showing after confirming the version and restarting the app, report it through the app's feedback tool rather than assume a workaround exists. Google's own release notes for 26.44.4 still list only "bug fixes," so until the company documents the change directly, the display fix remains something AppleInsider and MacRumors reported, not something Google has confirmed itself.
