WhatsApp mentions and replies filter: what it actually does
A notification pings the moment someone tags you in a group chat, then disappears the second you open WhatsApp, leaving that one message that actually needs you buried under dozens of other unread texts. WhatsApp is testing a fix: a WhatsApp mentions and replies filter spotted in the Android beta, according to The News, which cited WABetaInfo's discovery of the feature in version 2.26.42.12 on the Google Play Store two days ago.
The filter narrows the Chats tab down to conversations where someone mentioned or tagged you, or replied directly to one of your messages. It stays available in the Chats tab even after notifications are cleared, so the relevant conversation doesn't just vanish along with the alert, per the report. Reported testing covers both regular groups and Community subgroups.
This is a limited test running on some Android beta accounts, not a confirmed public release, and nothing in current reporting suggests it judges whether a message actually deserves a response. What follows is what's confirmed about how it works, what's still murky, and where to check if the beta is already on your phone.
How the WhatsApp mentions and replies filter works
The filter sits at the top of the Chats tab, in the same row as existing options like Unread, Favourites, and Groups, The News reported. Tap it and the list shrinks to only the chats where someone mentioned you or replied to something you wrote.
A badge shows a count, though the report doesn't spell out what that number actually represents. It could tally how many conversations contain a pending mention or reply, or it could tally the individual mentions and replies themselves, which would produce a very different number if one chat has several tagged messages waiting. Until WhatsApp or independent testers clarify the math, treat the badge as a rough pointer rather than an exact count.
Tapping into the filter when nothing qualifies brings up an empty screen with a link back to the full chat list, per the same report.
The filter also reaches into Communities. If someone mentions or replies to you inside a subgroup that belongs to a Community, that chat shows up in the filtered list too, the outlet noted. That matters for anyone managing a busy Community, since mentions inside a specific subgroup get lost the same way they do in any crowded group chat.
The WhatsApp Android beta new filter isn't a brand-new idea inside the app, either. It previously appeared under the working name "To You" in beta build 2.26.34.4 roughly two months ago, before resurfacing under its current label. The report doesn't explain why WhatsApp changed the name or whether "To You" and the mentions-and-replies filter share identical behavior behind the scenes.
What's confirmed, and what's still unknown
Reporting on this beta test establishes a narrow set of facts. It's worth separating those from the open questions before expecting too much from the feature.
Confirmed, based on The News' report:
- The filter appears at the top of the Chats tab alongside Unread, Favourites, and Groups.
- It narrows the chat list to conversations containing a mention or a reply to you.
- It covers regular group chats and Community subgroups.
- It remains available after notifications are cleared.
- It can be switched off or moved into the app's "More" section.
Still unknown, because the current reporting doesn't address it:
- Whether one-on-one direct messages are covered, since the reporting calls out groups and Community subgroups specifically without mentioning private chats.
- What exactly clears a conversation from the filtered list: opening the chat, reading the specific message, or replying to it.
- Whether a mention ages out of the list over time or stays there indefinitely until addressed.
- Whether the badge counts conversations or individual mentions and replies.
Those gaps aren't nitpicks. They decide whether this becomes a genuinely reliable way to track outstanding replies, or just a slightly better way to rediscover a tag you'd already forgotten about.
What the WhatsApp reply filter doesn't do
The filter appears to key off message structure, whether your name shows up in an @mention or whether a message is formatted as a reply to something you sent. Nothing in the current reporting indicates it evaluates urgency, tone, or whether you've already answered. That's a structural filter, not an intent-detection system.
A more literal "needs a reply" tool already exists, just for a different audience. In a report published last year, WABetaInfo described an AI-handoff filter rolling out to WhatsApp Business beta testers, which flags chats where an AI-powered automated reply couldn't fully resolve a customer's question. That filter only appears on Business accounts that have AI-powered replies switched on, and businesses control how long a flagged chat stays listed before it clears.
WABetaInfo's report describes that behavior for the separate Business tool only. It doesn't show that the consumer mentions-and-replies filter evaluates intent the same way. Anyone hoping the new Android beta filter will quietly judge which messages genuinely require a response should hold off on that assumption until there's evidence it does more than detect an @mention or a reply thread.
Who can access the WhatsApp Android beta filter now
Access is reportedly limited to some Android beta testers running version 2.26.42.12 through the Google Play Store, The News reported. That's a staged, account-based rollout, so installing that exact build doesn't guarantee the filter shows up.
When it does land, the filter appears automatically in the Chats tab, but it's optional. Testers can switch it off in settings or move it into the app's "More" section if they'd rather keep the filter row uncluttered, according to the report.
For context, WhatsApp announced a broader set of Chats-tab filters, including All, Unread, and Groups, back in 2024, with Meta calling Groups one of its most requested features at the time, TechCrunch reported. That rollout also extended to Community subgroups, similar to how the new mentions-and-replies filter behaves today. TechCrunch noted the filter bubbles resembled a feature Gmail introduced in 2020 to simplify inbox search, and reported that WABetaInfo had already spotted other filters in testing around the same period, including a Contacts option for messages from unknown numbers and a Favorites filter for frequently used contacts.
That 2024 rollout reached all users within a few weeks of its announcement, per TechCrunch, but that pace doesn't predict anything about this test. The current reporting describes an Android beta and doesn't establish availability on iOS, desktop, or the stable Android release channel.
What to do now
Beta testers running WhatsApp for Android should check whether their installed build is 2.26.42.12 or later and look at the top of the Chats tab. Don't assume the filter will be there even on that exact version, since access is reportedly limited to some accounts rather than everyone on that build.
Everyone else should treat this as something to track through official WhatsApp release notes rather than something arriving soon, given there's no confirmed timeline for iOS, desktop, or a stable Android release.
Whichever version eventually ships, don't treat a mention or reply showing up in this filter as proof that it still needs an answer. That kind of intent-based detection has only been documented in the separate Business AI-handoff tool, built for business accounts with AI replies turned on, not for everyday users checking a group chat.
