Why Phones No Longer Have Removable Batteries: 2027 EU Rules

A viral claim swept through social media this year: starting in February 2027, EU law will force Apple, Samsung, and every other smartphone maker to bring back pop-off battery covers. It's not true, but the real story is more interesting than the myth (Annie Lab, 2 months ago).

So why phones no longer have removable batteries is less a story of technical failure than of deliberate design choice. Manufacturers had swappable batteries figured out for years before they decided to seal them away in favor of thinner bodies, premium materials, and water resistance. Now EU regulation is nudging the industry back toward repairable batteries, though not in the form most people picture when they hear "removable."

Why phones no longer have removable batteries

Early 2010s Android phones like the Motorola Droid 3 had pop-off back panels that let you swap a battery in seconds and slide in a microSD card. That was the norm, not a niche feature (iFixit, last week).

Why are modern phone batteries sealed? The water-resistance trade-off

Will EU rules bring back replaceable phone batteries? The regulation, decoded

The rumor mill got one detail right, and then missed almost everything that matters. A real EU law, the Batteries Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, published in the Official Journal on July 28, 2023), does require portable batteries to be "readily removable and replaceable by the end-user" starting February 18, 2027 (Annie Lab, 2 months ago).

What the viral posts left out is that a separate, phone-specific law overrides that requirement. The Ecodesign Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2023/1670) has already bound manufacturers since June 2025 and takes precedence over the general Batteries Regulation on this point, per the European Commission's own guidelines (Annie Lab, 2 months ago). That's the actual EU removable battery regulation for phones in force right now, and it's built around a compromise most people haven't heard of.

The Ecodesign law gives manufacturers two paths, not one. They can make the battery replaceable with basic tools like a screwdriver, or they can build a battery durable enough, and a phone water-resistant enough, to qualify for professional-only repair instead (Annie Lab, 2 months ago). The bar for that second path is specific:

  • At least 83% battery capacity remaining after 500 charge cycles
  • At least 80% capacity remaining after 1,000 charge cycles
  • A minimum IP67 water and dust resistance rating

Apple's own support documentation, cited by Engadget, states that iPhone 15 and later models are designed to retain 80% capacity at 1,000 charge cycles, suggesting recent flagships may already clear that threshold without any redesign (Engadget, today). A review of the EU's own energy-label database backs that up: most current Apple and Samsung flagships likely already satisfy the durability requirement, meaning they could lean on professional repair instead of end-user swapping (Annie Lab, 2 months ago).

That's the crux of the myth-busting. The law is real, and it has an exemption sized almost perfectly for premium sealed phones. As Engadget puts it, expect a bunch of new phones next year with batteries that are relatively easy to replace, but don't expect manufacturers to drastically redesign their priciest models (Engadget, today).

What the rules change for owners, not just manufacturers

Even for phones that stay sealed, the law changes what happens after a battery fails, and that matters more than the removability debate suggests on its own. Manufacturers must keep spare batteries and screens available to both end-users and professional repairers for at least seven years after a model leaves the EU market (Annie Lab, 2 months ago).

That parts guarantee lands on a real problem. The same modeling estimates a 725 million euro reduction in lifetime societal costs and less waste of critical raw materials like cobalt and rare earth elements (EEB, 2021). Those are projections from an advocacy-driven study, not guaranteed outcomes, but they explain why regulators went after battery access in the first place rather than treating it as a cosmetic repair issue.

Where this leaves buyers

Removable batteries didn't vanish because engineers hit a wall. They disappeared because manufacturers chose thinness, premium materials, and water resistance over easy repair, and that shift was essentially finished among bestselling phones by 2019 (EEB, 2021). EU law is now pulling the industry back toward repairability, but the phone-specific exemption means most current flagships can likely keep their sealed designs by qualifying for professional-only replacement instead of a screwdriver job you'd do at your kitchen table.

The more useful question for shoppers after February 2027 probably isn't whether a phone has a removable battery. It's how long the manufacturer will keep selling parts for it, and who's allowed to install them, professional repairer or end-user. Rugged models like the Galaxy XCover 7 Pro and repair-focused phones like the Fairphone 6 already answer that question well.
