OPPO 16:9 Wide-Format Flagship Smartphone Leak Explained

OPPO 16:9 wide-format flagship smartphone leak explained

OPPO is reportedly developing a 16:9 wide-format flagship smartphone with a body wider than any mainstream Android phone currently sold, according to a Weibo post from tipster Digital Chat Station, cited by Android Authority this week. The leak describes LIPO display technology capable of symmetrical 1mm bezels on all four sides, with the chassis measuring roughly 81mm wide.

OPPO hasn't confirmed any of it. There's no teaser, device name, or launch window attached to the claim, and the report traces back to a single tipster's post rather than an official company statement, according to Android Authority.

A phone built this way already exists, just not from OPPO. Huawei's Pura X View, a non-folding phone with a 16:9.5 display and a 7,000mAh battery, has been on sale in China since September 9 (Tablet News, last month). Huawei's phone gives the OPPO rumor a real-world reference point, but it also sets a high bar for what OPPO's claim would need to clear before it looks like an actual product rather than a tipster's sketch.

What the 81mm-wide OPPO phone report claims

Digital Chat Station's post describes a 16:9 display paired with LIPO display technology that could keep bezels at roughly 1mm on all four sides, producing a chassis an estimated 81mm wide, noticeably wider than most conventional smartphones, according to Android Authority. The same report floats the idea that a wider screen could improve video playback and gaming, framed as a potential upside rather than anything measured or tested.

Everything past that is unknown. The leak includes no confirmed display size, resolution, chipset, battery capacity, weight, price, device name, or release window, according to Android Authority.

Digital Chat Station has a history of accurate OPPO and OnePlus leaks, and Android Authority's own reporting shows the tipster correctly called early OnePlus 16 display details ahead of OnePlus's official confirmation this week. That track record applies to a different phone, though, and it proves nothing about whether OPPO's wide-format claim will hold up. A single tipster's post still isn't a regulatory filing, a hands-on photo, or a company statement, so every spec attached to this leak stays provisional until one of those shows up.

Don't plan a purchase or an upgrade wait around this leak yet. It describes a possibility, not a product.

Huawei already sells a wide-screen phone, just not here

Huawei's Pura X View is the clearest proof this format can actually ship. It pairs a 6.39-inch OLED display using a 16:9.5 aspect ratio with a 7,000mAh battery, in a body 6.68mm thick and weighing 201 grams, with Huawei-reported bezels of 1.05mm on all sides and a 96.1% screen-to-body ratio (Tablet News, last month). Huawei also lists IP68 and IP69 water and dust resistance, with 66W wired and 50W wireless charging on the same phone (Tablet News, last month).

A 16:9.5 ratio is slightly taller and narrower than a straight 16:9, not a more extreme wide-screen format. So the measurable comparison available right now actually runs the other way: Huawei's phone is 87mm wide with a 16:9.5 display, while OPPO's rumored phone would be narrower at 81mm with a wider-feeling 16:9 display, according to Android Authority and Tablet News. Those two figures alone don't say much about how either phone actually handles, since OPPO hasn't reported a display height or full body dimensions to complete the picture.

Pricing for the Pura X View starts at 5,999 yuan, about $830, for the 12GB/256GB configuration, rising to 6,999 yuan for 512GB and 8,499 yuan for the 1TB model (Tablet News, last month). The phone has sold in China since early September, and Huawei has not confirmed US or global availability (Tablet News, last month; Memeburn, seven weeks ago). Huawei phones also aren't sold through official channels in the United States, and imported units may arrive without warranty coverage, carrier certification, or Google Mobile Services (Memeburn, seven weeks ago).

What's confirmed for Huawei, and what's still just a leak for OPPO

Huawei has published a full spec sheet. OPPO has a single tipster's post. That gap in evidence runs through nearly every open question about this format.

Take ergonomics. Neither the OPPO leak nor the Huawei reporting addresses how an 81mm-to-87mm-wide phone actually feels to hold or use one-handed; the cited reports don't cover pocket fit, grip, or weight distribution for either device (Tablet News, last month). Huawei's 201-gram, 6.68mm Pura X View is at least a measured, shipping phone. OPPO's figures are still estimates pulled from a leak.

Software splits the same way. Huawei says HarmonyOS 7 is optimized for wide-screen layouts, meaning apps adapt to the wider canvas instead of stretching to fill it, a company claim with no independent verification in current reporting (Memeburn, seven weeks ago). OPPO's report doesn't touch software at all, leaving open whether ColorOS or standard Android apps would adapt natively to a 16:9 layout or just stretch into it awkwardly.

The folding alternative: Motorola's Razr Wide Fold

Not every company chasing extra screen width is doing it with a fixed-width slab. Motorola is reportedly developing a Razr Wide Fold with a 6.92-inch, 165Hz inner OLED display, a 4.97-inch cover display, a 5,000mAh dual-cell battery, and Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 power, according to Android Authority 11 days ago. Leaked mockups show a stubby, rounded design, and the phone is expected to measure 12.6mm thick when folded, compared with the Galaxy Z Fold 8's 9.7mm, according to the same report.

The extra thickness reflects a trade-off that's built into any hinge. A foldable can offer more usable screen area than many conventional slab phones, but the mechanism needed to fold it adds bulk that Huawei's one-piece design skips entirely. Motorola's phone is equally unconfirmed, with a rumored release around mid-December, which makes it a useful point of comparison on design trade-offs rather than a competing product with a locked launch date.

Where this leaves OPPO's wide-format phone

OPPO's phone currently rests on one tipster's claim, with no device name, launch window, confirmed dimensions beyond an estimated width, or regional availability attached to it, according to Android Authority. An official OPPO teaser or regulatory filing, a confirmed display size and resolution, and measured weight and thickness in place of estimates would be the first signs this moves from rumor toward a real product.

For now, the report gives buyers nothing to act on. Huawei's already-shipping Pura X View remains the only working example of the format, and it's sold exclusively in China, with no warranty or carrier support for anyone importing one. Treat the OPPO leak as something to track, not a device to plan a purchase around.
