Snapchat 101: How to Unlock Hidden Filters & Lenses
There's nothing more fun than unlocking a hidden Snapchat filter and beating everyone to that perfect first selfie. So when a new filter comes out, like the current Game of Thrones one, it's always interesting to see how the filter will turn out to be.
You never know when you might turn into a pineapple, a giraffe, or who knows what else. Snapchat is a bounty of laugh-out-loud fun, and with just a couple minutes' time and the right knowledge, you can unlock a number of new filters to play around with.
A hidden filter can be found within a Snapcode on the side of a Wendy's cup, in a tweet, or even a simple hyperlink. Snapcode images sort of look like QR codes, but in a Snapchatty way. Unlocking these Snapcodes only take a few steps, too, so let's get to it.
As for the question of where you might find special Snapcodes that unlock hidden filters, this will vary. As I mentioned earlier, they're sometimes found on limited edition products and occasionally on websites. If you'd just like something to test with, you can find the Game of Thrones Snapcode in this tweet, though, note that this Snapcode will likely expire at some point in the future.
On that note, certain Snapcodes can be unlocked by simply opening a hyperlink on your phone. Using the special Game of Thrones filters as an example, you could simply tap this link, then your Snapchat app would open and you'd immediately be prompted to unlock the new filters.
If you're scanning a Snapcode instead of just tapping on a hyperlink, the first thing you have to do to unlock a hidden filter is to open up your Snapchat app. Then, double tap on your camera icon to enable your rear camera view. Place the Snapcode image in front of your camera and get it in focus. Long-press on the Snapcode in your viewfinder until it is recognized and your phone vibrates.
Whether you scanned a Snapcode or tapped on a URL link, you'll see a "New Lens Found!" or "New Filter" message pop up. Tap on "Unlock" or "Unlock for 1 hour" (or another time frame) on the "News Lens Found!" message.
Once unlocked, try out the new filter by going to your camera. To use the filter, enable selfie view. If you don't see your face, double tap on your screen. Tap your face on the camera until it recognizes you and a row of selfie filters pop up on the right next to the record button.
Your unlocked filter should be one of the first in the row. If you don't see your new one there, swipe the selfie icons to the left until you find the new lens. Once found, tap on it. Now, follow the instructions on how to use the new filter.
