"Valar morghulis." Don't know what that means? You should probably download Duolingo for Android or iPhone.
Duolingo is a free app that lets you learn other languages using fun mini-games and writing tests while also allowing you to collaborate with and compete against other users. The app has recently taken to not only teaching languages like Spanish and French but also adding fictional languages like Star Trek's Klingon to the mix.
Now, the app has announced that they are adding High Valyrian from Game of Thrones, the popular HBO series.
Duolingo has collaborated closely with linguist David J. Peterson on this project since 2016. Peterson was the one who helped to create High Valyrian on Game of Thrones in the first place, along with the language Dothraki. High Valyrian is the language of the old Valyrian Freehold. Most characters do not speak it, with the major exception being Daenerys Targaryen, one of the most iconic and easily recognized characters on the show.
Fans have expressed wanting to learn High Valyrian, especially since they've seen it wielded like a weapon from the mouth of Dany. The inclusion of High Valyrian offers fans an immersive experience and the opportunity to feel more connected to the show.
Myra Awodey, the lead community specialist at Duolingo, spoke about what she hopes High Valyrian will add for users:
Our mission at Duolingo is to make it free, fun and easy for people worldwide to learn new languages, regardless of whether the language is real or fictional. Learning High Valyrian just in time for the new Game of Thrones season helps millions of fans connect with each other and with the show and its characters on an entirely new level. That's what language learning is all about.
The feature is being released just in time for Game of Thrones to premiere in its 7th season on HBO. However, you can't learn High Valyrian just yet — it will be available prior to the premiere on July 16. In the meantime, here's the only High Valyrian word that is absolutely essential for you to know.
