Urban Armor Gear's new wet phone rescue pouch is entering a market where the baseline advice is already clear, well-sourced, and costs nothing. The UAG rescue pouch is built on DRYOUT, a patented moisture-removal material that the company says absorbs up to 3,400 times more than a silica gel packet. Every one of those performance figures comes from DRYOUT's own press materials. No independent testing exists. That gap between what the company claims and what external evidence shows is the central reporting question here.

The moment a phone gets wet, the clock starts. Disconnect from power immediately. Hold the phone port-down and shake it gently 5 to 10 times to clear standing water from the port. Set it on a dry cloth near a fan and leave it alone for at least 24 hours before attempting to charge, per Samsung Support. Skip the hair dryer; heat damages internal components. Skip the rice; Telstra, citing Apple's guidance, reported in May 2024 that rice grains can lodge in ports and speakers, potentially converting a moisture problem into a more expensive mechanical repair. If silica gel packets are on hand, seal the phone in a bag with them for 24 to 48 hours. That's the protocol. Everything else, including the rescue pouch, gets evaluated against it.

Moisture in the phone charging port: what Samsung and Apple-aligned guidance actually say

The scenario most people don't recognize when it happens is port moisture, not full submersion. When a Samsung Galaxy device detects water in or around the USB port, it automatically disables charging to prevent corrosion and electrical damage. Samsung's guidance assumes the issue is temporary moisture in the port and states that charging remains disabled until that moisture fully evaporates, per Samsung Support, updated last month. That safety mechanism is active on IP68-rated models including the Galaxy S24, Z Fold, Z Flip, and A series.

Samsung's official recovery steps: disconnect from power, shake the phone port-down 5 to 10 times to dislodge standing water, then lay it flat on a dry cloth in a ventilated area or in front of a fan. Heat sources such as hair dryers and ovens are explicitly ruled out as damaging to internal components. The expected wait before charging is at least 24 hours, Samsung Support advises.

Telstra, citing Apple's guidance, layers one addition onto that protocol: seal the phone in a bag with silica gel packets for 24 to 48 hours. Speed matters. The faster moisture removal begins, the better the recovery odds, Telstra reports. Cotton swabs and paper towels are counterproductive, capable of pushing water deeper into the device rather than drawing it out.

One distinction worth keeping clear: Samsung's port-moisture documentation covers damp charging areas after a splash or rain exposure. Full submersion is a different severity and may involve different considerations entirely.

What DRYOUT claims, and where UAG fits in

DRYOUT launched earlier this year as a materials brand with a narrow focus: active moisture removal for electronics and outdoor gear. The technology is a patented layered construction combining nylon and superabsorbent polymer that the company says actively pulls and traps moisture rather than passively absorbing ambient humidity. A single 6-by-12 inch panel can absorb up to 32.4 grams of moisture (roughly 648 drops of water) and draw that moisture from up to 8 inches away without direct contact, the company announced via PR Newswire.

The headline comparison figures are aggressive. DRYOUT claims its material absorbs up to 3,400 times more moisture than a silica gel packet and up to 11 times more than a dehumidifier. Unlike single-use desiccant sachets, the material can be reset for reuse in as little as 30 minutes and reused indefinitely, according to the same release.

UAG's adoption of DRYOUT technology extends the brand's existing device-protection positioning. The company's case lineup includes the Monarch Pro, rated to 25 feet of drop protection, and the Plasma XTE, rated to 20 feet, along with magnet-integrated accessories and wireless charging hardware, per UAG's Galaxy S24 launch materials from early 2024. A phone moisture removal pouch fits that logic: the move is from preventing physical damage to recovering from environmental exposure. Whether the product delivers on DRYOUT's numbers is the open question.

Alternative to rice for wet phones: airflow, silica gel, or rescue pouch

Passive airflow is the default manufacturer recommendation and the reference point against which everything else should be measured. Fan-assisted drying on a cloth costs nothing, requires no preparation, and has Samsung's direct backing. Samsung's guidance treats this as the standard resolution path for port-moisture detection, with charging expected to re-enable once moisture has fully evaporated, per Samsung Support.

Silica gel in a sealed bag is the Apple-aligned option in the sources reviewed here for accelerating that process. Inexpensive, widely available, and free of the debris risk that disqualified rice. Telstra, citing Apple, recommends 24 to 48 hours sealed with the packets, as reported here. No independent head-to-head comparison between silica gel and passive airflow alone appears in the available evidence, but silica gel is the only desiccant option with manufacturer-adjacent endorsement in these sources.

DRYOUT-based rescue pouches carry the most ambitious claims in the category. The reusability case is genuinely differentiated from silica gel: a pouch that resets in 30 minutes and works indefinitely is a different proposition from restocking sachets after each incident. The 3,400x absorption figure, if accurate, would represent a performance gap wide enough to change the calculus entirely. But every number here originates from DRYOUT's own press release, published in January. No independent laboratory testing, no third-party review, and no controlled comparison against silica gel or passive airflow for wet-phone recovery appears in the available evidence. Until that changes, the figures should be read as company marketing.

What the evidence supports right now

What would close the gap: independent testing that measures charging recovery time and corrosion risk after moisture exposure, compared head-to-head against passive drying and silica gel. That test would show whether DRYOUT's absorption capacity translates into meaningfully faster outcomes or just an impressive number on a press release. Without it, the UAG rescue pouch is a product with a coherent concept, self-reported performance figures, and no external verification. A reasonable starting position for a new category entrant. Not yet a basis for a confident recommendation.
