Special Film Turns 2D LCD Screens into Glasses-Free 3D Displays

Smartphones have already hit the shelves with glasses-free 3D displays, but now you can enjoy the luxury of a 3D display on your 2D devices, thanks to Japanese company Global Wave. They've developed a special film that allows you to enjoy three-dimensional content on existing two-dimensional products, from laptops to computer monitors, along with iPads and iPhones.

It's called Pic3D and is based on a lenticular lens system, which uses an array of magnifying lenses to display images at different angles, producing the illusion of depth. To start viewing 3D content, you'll need to snag one of their 3D films, apply it to your LCD display and download the software from Global Wave's website. Then in the program, you'll need to set up the image and the stereoscopic image side by side.

"Basically it will work with video files which are in the side by side format, and if you input URLs for side by side formatted content on sites such as YouTube, it will work with them too. Right now we plan to begin sales in early August, and at first we plan to sell it through our own direct sales website."

Pic3D retains ninety percent of the of the displays brightness, with viewing angles going as wide as 120 degrees. Global Wave will start selling the sheets this August, with prices ranging from $25 (iPhone and iPod touch) to $186 (23-inch).
