Affordability complicates the Indian market further. Forty-three percent of surveyed buyers say they frequently use EMI installment financing, meaning even shoppers who name camera or AI features as priorities are also getting there through installment plans rather than paying full price up front (Counterpoint Research/Flipkart, earlier this year). Test any "AI-powered" pitch against a task the phone actually needs to do; AI's weight in a purchase decision looks different depending on which country and which stage of the buying journey a survey is measuring.
What durability actually buys you
Recon's ownership data raises a question about whether budget phones are simply "good enough" for less money. Motorola owners hold their devices for just 1.88 years on average, the shortest tenure in the dataset, and register a 10.7% failure rate. Samsung flagship owners keep devices for 2.62 years, the longest tenure tracked, with an 8.1% failure rate. Apple owners average 2.24 years and post the lowest failure rate in the dataset at 7.9% (Recon Analytics, earlier this year).
Recon reads that pattern, shorter tenure paired with higher failure at the budget end, as evidence that premium hardware holds up better over extended ownership. That's a reasonable read of the numbers, but it's an unadjusted comparison across brand tiers, not a controlled durability test. It doesn't isolate price tier from things like usage habits, drop frequency, repairability, or the mix of specific models inside each brand's dataset. The numbers are real; the causal story behind them is an interpretation, not a proven one.
Longer tenure also shows up in who's due for an upgrade next. Samsung's flagship buyers enter 2026 with 64.4% of that installed base already sitting in the two-plus-year upgrade window, the highest share of any brand Recon tracked, consistent with their longer average ownership. Apple's replacement-ready pool is smaller by share at 51.8%, but its much larger installed base still makes it the largest absolute pool of buyers likely to replace a phone soon (Recon Analytics, earlier this year).
GSMA's separate survey on circularity adds a preference layer to the durability question. Eighty-five percent of consumers globally say sustainability matters when buying a phone, ranking above device aesthetics (73%) and AI capabilities (67%), and more than 70% say they'd pay a premium for an environmentally friendly device (GSMA, last year). The qualities buyers say they want, a phone that doesn't fail early and keeps getting supported, are the same qualities that make repair, trade-in, and refurbished purchases worth considering, but only if the specific unit's condition and support terms actually hold up.
What to check before you buy
If a phone just broke or its software support ran out, resist the pull toward the newest launch just because it's the shiniest option in front of you. Check network band compatibility, confirm any carrier trade-in promotion genuinely beats buying outright, and weigh a model's remaining update commitment more heavily than the length of its AI feature list. If the current phone still works but feels slow, don't assume a new purchase is the only fix. Compare the remaining OS and security-update window and an estimated battery-replacement cost against the price of a new device. A battery swap or a software cleanup can be worth assessing first, and either one may resolve the slowdown, though neither will fix a device that's run out of storage space or software support.
If a certified refurbished or used phone is on the table, check battery health or replacement options, the return window, warranty terms, network band compatibility, and how many years of software support remain on that specific model. The original release date is one of the first details worth checking since it helps estimate how much support time is left, but the manufacturer's actual commitment for that model still matters more than the date alone.
